The Premier Lifestyle Magazine of Florida's Black Communities
It is obvious that neighborkids of Central-Cocoanut of Newtown are big-time readers. Out and about in the neighborhood, kids often are spotted reading all sorts of things — not only books, but also song lyrics, playground signs, newspapers, food labels, facebook posts and valentines, just to name a few. Babies are reading. Kids are reading to babies. Kids are reading to kids. Parents are reading to kids. Reading is happening every day here.
So what do kids have to say about reading? What do neighborhood maps show about how neighborkids are reading at school? And most importantly: What can we do together as neighbors so that the kids of Central-Cocoanut are BEST AT READING in all of Sarasota County?
Neighbors of Central-Cocoanut will be gathering at Sarasota Community Studio for a Neighborhood READING MEETING on Saturday, February 23 at 2:00pm. Child care and snacks will be included. Neighborkids will share their perspective on reading. Maps and other neighborhood information will be reviewed. Then neighbors – kids and adults together — will get busy figuring out what it will take to be THAT neighborhood where all kids are experiencing the full excitement and reward of reading.
