SARASOTA SPORTS FESTIVAL TO BE HELD
SAT., JUNE 16 IN PAYNE PARK
Sarasota, FL:The inaugural Sarasota Sports Festival, a free family fun day to boost awareness of Payne Park in downtown Sarasota, will be held this Saturday, June 16, 2012 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. The free event will feature a family fun run/walk, motivational exercise classes and a wide variety of sporting events and demonstrations from disc golf to Strider bicycling to Teddy Tennis. The new circus themed playground at Payne Park also will be unveiled to the public and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey will perform a special one-time only act just for the Sarasota Sports Festival at 9:30 a.m. “I envisioned this family fun day over a year ago,” said Mayor Suzanne Atwell. “Thanks to a terrific hard working committee we’re putting together a fabulous event that will put our beautiful Payne Park on the map and give families a reason to get out and exercise while having fun on a Saturday,” said Mayor Atwell. Payne Park is located at 2050 Adams Lane.

Activities will kick off at 8:30 a.m. with a family fun run/walk around the half-mile Payne Park track. Then, while Gold’s Gym instructors lead invigorating exercise classes on the main stage, various other events will get underway simultaneously throughout the park. “I’m really excited about this festival,” said Joe Duffus, Sports Festival Chairman and CEO of FIT Group, a Gold’s Gym partner. “Sports festivals are becoming very popular around the country. Some cities have tens of thousands of people who show up to their events. Sarasota has never seen anything like this before and I think families are going to have a great day filled with free fun,” said Duffus. Festival goers are encouraged to stroll the grounds and test their aptitude with different sports throughout the day. Scheduled activities include:
BMX Strider: USA BMX member toddlers will kick off their sporting event in style with a parade in the park complete with streamers dangling from their handlebars. This is one parade you won’t want to miss! Make sure you check out the Sarasota BMX Strider Adventure Zone, where children 18-months to 5-years-old will take balance bikes (two wheels with no pedals) for a spin over terrain and around obstacles. Strider is considered to be the most effective method of teaching balance to children 18-months to 24-months-old.
Disc Golf: The Sarasota Sky Pilots Disc Golf Club will have a 3-hole disc golf course set up for the public to play. Discs will be provided and local players will be on hand to demonstrate proper form and provide pointers. Putting contests also will be held throughout the day. The leading point earners will win a prize!
Playground: The much anticipated circus themed playground at Payne Park, currently under construction, will be open to the public for the first time. To celebrate the event, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey will perform a special one-time only free act near the playground at 9:30 a.m.
Skateboarding: The Skate Park will be free and open to the public. Skateboarding and BMX demonstrations will be held throughout the day at this world class facility.
Teddy Tennis: Introduce your little ones, ages 3-6, to tennis in a fun, creative way! Through the use of music, pictures and teddy bear stories, Teddy Tennis encourages children to be active and develop coordination skills plus self confidence. Developed in England, the first Teddy Tennis franchise in Florida was launched right here in Sarasota. Find out why children are falling in love with tennis!
USTA 10 & Under Tennis: Two courts will be reserved for players 10 & under and two courts for ages 8 & under. Play and win prizes!
Family Tennis: Join local tennis professionals in the afternoon as they teach aerobic tennis drills for the family.
Two adorable mascots also will make appearances at the Sarasota Sports Festival:
The Bird: The Baltimore Orioles’ mascot will be roaming the festival grounds. Find The Bird in the park and have your picture taken!
Danny Bear: Danny Bear, the Teddy Tennis mascot, has travelled all the way from England to attend the inaugural Sarasota Sports Festival. Don’t miss seeing his adorable fuzzy mug!
Morton’s Market, Evie’s and Smoothie King also will be on hand selling food and drinks. (Complimentary water will be provided to those participating in sporting events.) A vendor village will host dozens of local businesses affiliated with sports and wellness.
